The biggest sporting event on our planet is finally here. This tournament will witness the rise of some global superstars and some relatively unknown names becoming the national heroes but for some it will be emotional farewell as we look at the five legendary athletes who will be playing their last Olympics –

Roger Federer

The Swiss sensation has said that he is not in a mood of retirement anytime soon but is 34 now and will be around 38 during the next Olympics so his chances of playing in the next Olympics looks diminished. The tennis legend will be hoping to secure his third gold medal but the chances look faded as age is showing its mark on one of the modern greats.

Michael Phelps

Arguably the greatest Olympian of all time Michel Phelps will be aiming to expand his tally of medals to a new high. He is coming back from the retirement but the one after the Rio Olympics will be his final retirement. The flag bearer for the USA Olympic rooster has 22 medals to his name and 18 of them are gold and will be a force to reckon with again in the Rio Olympics.

Lin Dan

Lin Dan is a house hold name to the badminton folks all around the world. He is considered as the most decorated badminton player of all time and is the only badminton player to win back to back titles at the Olympics. He will be hoping to complete his Hat Trick by snatching the gold medal once again.

Usain Bolt

Breaking an Olympic record in a stunning style and doing the same thing again is a statement of intent and Usain Bolt has done it in past. The legendary Jamaican sprinter has already announced that he would retire from the track events scene and hence will be hoping to strengthen his legacy with another gold medal.

Serena Williams

The most gifted female athlete of all time will be in her last Olympics and has currently equaled the Steffi Graff’s record of 22 grand slam titles but the four times Olympian will be playing his last Olympics where he will be defending her gold medal and will be hoping to make his tally of 4 medals to 5 medals.
