122 Indians to play at the Rio Olympics 2016

Indian Sports Minister Vijay Goyal along with IOC president N Ram Chandra and Secretary Rajiv Mehta in the presence of Olympic squad leader Rakesh Gupta and the Sports Authority of India’s Director General Injeti Srinivas announced in a press conference at his home that total 122 Indians will be participating in 14 games to bring home medals for the nations.

This is India’s biggest Olympic contingent and it’s for the first time over a 100 athletes will be representing India in the most important tournament of Sports history. This year’s Olympics will be hosted by Brazil and will be played form 5th to 21st August. The only Individual Gold winner for India at the Olympics, Abhinav Bindra will be the Flag bearer for the Indian team as they began their quest for medals after the opening ceremony of the Olympics in the Maracana Stadium.

Building on the success of London

The Indian contingent along with the whole nation will be surely hoping to build on the success they emulated at London four years ago. Indian team snatched four bronze medals along with two silver ones, thus achieving the highest ever medal tally for India. The Indian contingent will be hoping to win Gold medals this time which they couldn’t win four years ago.

Some major Misses

The Indian contingent is all set to miss some major superstars this time that have starred for them at the grandest stage of all and the biggest miss will be felt in the name of Sushil Kumar who was a sure shot hope for gold in Rio but was unlucky to not qualify for the Olympics this time due to injury scare and some controversy. Vijender Singh who joined professional boxing will also be major miss along with the 5 time World Champion Boxer Mary Kom.

Quest for gold

The Indian contingent is blessed with some star players that can snatch the gold for the country and Yogeshwar Dutt playing his fourth and last Olympic is a prime contender along with Flag bearer Abhinav Bindra and the 2015 Archery World Champion Deepika Kumari.
