Perhaps one of the most disappointing matches on an otherwise well prepared match card at WrestleMania XX was Bill Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar.
We saw Chris Benoit winning the World Heavyweight title from Triple H in the first ever triple threat match against Triple H and Shawn Michaels, Eddie Guerrero won the title from Kurt Angle, Taker won the match against Kane. A lot was expected from both powerhouses, especially after Lesnar put on a five star match against Kurt Angle at WrestleMania XIX.
It was just one of those moments that even the Texas Rattlesnake, Stone Cold Steve Austin could not save. The fans turned on the match, and the match was way below expectations as both the superstars appeared to be ‘restricted’ in the way they approached their match.
In the year, 2014 at WrestleMania 30, Lesnar did the unthinkable. He defeated the Undertaker, breaking the Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania. Ever since then, Lesnar has never been pinned cleanly, nor has he been at the receiving end of any attack from any superstar. Not even the face that runs the place, John Cena. Lesnar is unstoppable currently.
However, Goldberg on the other hand, is a powerhouse in his own right. He already holds a victory over Lesnar and that is definitely something that would hurt Lesnar’s stock price and value. Lesnar along with his advocate, Paul Heyman have expressed their displeasure about the same.
Goldberg on the other hand has maintained that he has nothing to prove and does not owe a rematch to Lesnar. The only reason he is accepting Lesnar’s challenge is because he is married now and has a ten year old son; both of whom have never seen him live in the ring.
This past week on WWE RAW, we had footage from both Lesnar and Goldberg where they shared their thoughts about their upcoming match. Lesnar had some intense words for Goldberg and Goldberg promptly returned the favor. The two superstars are expected to be present in Buffalo on the 11/14 episode of RAW, expect more shots to be fired.
Brock Lesnar, maintained that at WrestleMania XX he did not give a shit about wrestling and that he had other interests to pursue. He wanted to experience football and martial arts. He went there, conquered everything and came back to where it all began.
Responding to Goldberg’s constant reminder of him doing it for his family, Lesnar said that he respects that, but advised Goldberg’s son and wife not to watch the match as they cannot watch what he is going to do to Goldberg.
He also added that it is suicide for anyone to get into a fight with Brock Lesnar at any time. Lesnar also added that Goldberg can be whatever he wants to be, but there is only one true ass kicker, and that is Brock Lesnar. Heyman chipped in by saying that everyone expected Dwayne the Rock Johnson to end the ‘new kid on the block’ or the next big thing at Summerslam in 2002, but even he succumbed to the beast, Brock Lesnar.
The same can be expected from Bill Goldberg.
Bill Goldberg, obviously did not take too kindly to Lesnar’s words. He has stated on multiple occasions that the drive to be a superstar for the kids is what gets him to do what he does in the ring and that it would be a blessing to do it in front of his family. He said that it pisses him off that Lesnar could bring his family into this and that the ass kicking that he was planning to give Lesnar just got trumped by the ass kicking that he is going to deliver to Lesnar at Survivor Series.
He also added that Lesnar is an animal and it takes a lot of training to compete with a guy of Lesnar’s caliber, but he is no less of an animal. He has been training hard and the world will see what he is capable of doing at Survivor Series.
As a pro wrestling fan growing up, this is definitely one of the biggest matches of all time, especially with Goldberg mentioning that his match against Lesnar would be his last. He maintained that Lesnar is not only ‘next’, but he is also, ‘the last’
We definitely have goosebumps!
