This show has a lot of expectations to live up with, especially with the RAW brand putting up such a great show last night. New set and same announcers’ table position. The show comes to us live from the First Niagara Center from Buffalo, New York.
As expected, the show opens with the general manager and commissioner in the ring with the whole roster surrounding the ring. Shane announces that SmackDown’s first sole pay per view would be Backlash. He says that Dean Ambrose needs a new opponent at Summerslam for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. There is going to be a 6 pack challenge tonight, with John Cena, Bray Wyatt, AJ Styles, Baron Corbin and Dolph Ziggler. The 6th position is open for the whole roster, which will be decided through an over the top rope battle royal.
Battle Royal: Participants: Kane, Simon Gotch, The Ascension, The Usos, Breezango, Ryder and Crews, Del Rio, Kalitso, Apollo Crews. Kane gets the upper hand by eliminating most of the athletes. We are now down to the final three, Apollo Crews, Ryder and Kane. Ryder hits the Broski boot both on Kane and Crews, but runs into a choke slam by Kane. Kane eliminates Ryder. Kane sets up Crews for a chokes slam, but Crews escapes and eliminates Kane for the win.
Thoughts: This was an unexpected turn of events, although Ryder was the favorite to win the match. Kane did a great job by help putting over newer talent, like he always does. So, it’s going to be Apollo Crews joining the Six Pack Challenge.
We get a promo announcing the return of the Gold Standard, Shelton Benjamin to Smack Down! This is exciting, as from an athletic superstars point of view, Smack Down can give RAW a run for their money.
Becky Lynch vs Natalya: A re-match from Battleground. Expect these two women to carry the flag for the divas division for Smack Down. Becky gets the win by getting out of a sharp shooter attempt into the Dis-arm-her. After the match, Alexa Bliss makes an entrance and cuts a promo on Becky. She is interrupted by a returning Naomi and Eva Marie. Nothing much to say here.
